Shimmering Harmonics (2010)

Shimmering Harmonics, for percussion trio, was composed during the spring of 2010 for Matt Evans, Nathaniel Hartman, and Carson Moody. The instrumentation consists of Tam Tam, cymbals, and timpani. I wanted to create a piece based on the timbre of the instruments. For example, the tam tam makes an absolutely wonderful sound when played softly. All of these different, lovely, harmonics appear, hence the title of this piece. The piece begins and ends with the quiet tremolo on the tam tam. I layered the other instruments above the tam tam who, for the most part, also play quietly. The focus is on the timbre of the instruments and not rhythmic.
