Northern Lights for classical guitar and Max/MSP (2010) Northern Lights was composed in August of 2010 for a solo concert I was to give later that fall. This is an electro-acoustic piece that uses live processing of the guitar sound courtesy of Max/MSP. The electronics are used to enhance the guitar in certain spots to create a “chorus of guitars.” Northern Lights alternates between faster, Max/MSP processed sounds with slower, reflective solo sections. The characteristic of the classical guitar that I enjoy the most is the range of colors, or timbre, it can produce. With the addition of Max/MSP, I am able to increase the range of colors. I titled this piece, Northern Lights, because of this.
